PAS-55

Many companies are getting involved with PAS55.  Should they get those projects over with before embarking on LRCM?

PAS55 is a compendium of asset management practices that have gained some currency over the past century. LRCM embodies the principles of continuous process improvement better than anything in PAS55.

LRCM does not conflict with any “best” practices within PAS55 such as remote data collection, mobile devices, real time databases, and so on. All center on data and information collection and analysis. Data ends up in a database. Without LRCM that’s where it will likely stay (and rot). With LRCM that data will transform into a valuable resource for analysis enabling continuous verifiable improvement of maintenance process effectiveness.

PAS 55 is the British Standards Institution’s (BSI) Publicly Available Specification for the optimized management of physical assets – it provides clear definitions and a 28-point requirements specification for establishing and verifying a joined-up, optimized and whole-life management system for all types of physical assets. Now internationally recognized, PAS 55 is proving to be an essential, objective definition of what is required to demonstrate competence, establish improvement priorities and make better, clearer connections between strategic organizational plans and the actual day-to-day work and asset realities. … http://pas55.net/

PAS55 is really nothing new – it is the codification of a series of pre-existing methods (including, for example, the SAE JA1011 RCM criteria standard). Caution is advised regarding this latest fad. PAS55 certification programs can divert needed human maintenance engineering energy from more practical reliability centered initiatives.
