The reliability curve, also known as the survival graph eventually approaches 0 as time goes to infinity. How do we show that the area below the reliability curve is equal to the mean time to failure (MTTF) or average life of the item?<\/em><\/p>\n

We would like to show that\u00a0the expected or average life of an item is:<\/p>\n

Integrate by parts:<\/p>\n

\n\"dv=dt\"
\n\"\frac{du}{dv}=\frac{dR(t)}{dt}\"<\/p>\n

But\u00a0\"R(t)=1-F(t)\" and\u00a0\"\frac{dF(t)}{dt}=f(t)\"<\/p>\n

Therefore\u00a0\"\frac{du}{dt}=\frac{-dF(t)}{dt}=-f(t)\"<\/p>\n

Then \"du=-f(t)dt\"<\/p>\n

Substituting into\u00a0\"\int udv = uv -\int vdu \":<\/p>\n
